Patriots vs. Broncos highlights: Special teams touchdown adds to New England’s lead

The New England Patriots’ special teams unit has had its fair share of issues all season, including earlier in the Week 16 primetime matchup with the Denver Broncos. In the third quarter, however, the group was ready to capitalize on a massive mistake by its opponent.

After a Bailey Zappe-to-Mike Gesicki touchdown allowed the Patriots to go up 16-7, rookie Chad Ryland sent the kickoff deep toward Broncos return man Marvin Mims.

Mims muffed the ball upon initially receiving it, recovered, but on the ensuing attempt at a runback was stripped by another Patriots rookie, Marte Mapu. Veteran Cody Davis had a free shot at the loose football and did not let the opportunity pass: he recovered the fumble and one yard later found himself in the end zone for a touchdown.

The score put New England up 23-7 with 1:28 left in the third quarter.
