Just five days before their season finale against the New England Patriots, the New York Jets have decided to part ways with Dalvin Cook. The veteran running back will be placed on waivers Wednesday, putting an end to a disappointing season that had started with high expectations.

Cook, 28, arrived in New York after four straight 1,000-yard seasons as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. Signing a one-year, $7 million contract with $5.8 million in guarantees, the hope was that he would help reinvigorate the Jets’ offense together with the team’s marquee offseason trade acquisition, quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Neither move worked out for the team. After Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon in the season opener, Cook was mostly ineffective. He touched the ball only 82 for 292 yards with no touchdowns but a pair of fumbles.

In his game against the Patriots in Week 3, he carried the ball eight times for 18 yards and gained 11 more on three receptions.

The two AFC East rivals’ Week 18 matchup at Gillette Stadium will be kicked off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 7.
