Red Sox News & Links: Sox Meeting With Yamamoto

Plus, Triston Casas goes deep.

Unlike the Mets, whose owner flew to Japan to meet with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and wasn’t shy about talking about it, the Red Sox have remained tight-lipped about their pursuit of the 25-year-old ace. But it has now been confirmed that team officials will be meeting with Yamamoto in person imminently. The Sox were already one 13 teams who talked with Yamamoto over Zoom, but they’re now just one of seven teams who are still in the running for his services, including the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, and Blue Jays. (Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic)

Whatever happens with Yamamoto, let’s hope it’s resolved soon, because his pending decision is apparently the reason why the team has not yet signed or traded for any other starting pitchers yet. (Alex Speier, Boston Globe)

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t making other, smaller moves. Yesterday, they signed former Gold Glove catcher Roberto Perez to a minor league deal. (Julian McWilliams, Boston Globe)

And it’s not like they weren’t trying to reach a deal with other pitchers while they wait. We have confirmation that they were, in fact, one of four teams who gave an offer to Seth Lugo, who recently signed with the Royals. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)

They’ve also reached out to the Seattle Mariners about a potential trade for pitching, only to be rebuffed. But the White Sox are listening to offers for Dylan Cease. (Jason Ounpraseuth, NESN)

In news regarding players who already are on the team, Triston Casas was in town recently, and spoke to the media in his Casasian way: “I struggle sometimes with knowing my purpose in life and what this all means, being a baseball player compared to a workforce member or a teacher or a firefighter. We get so much attention and compensation that sometimes I’m confused about the dynamic of the world.” You and me both, Triston. (Alex Speier Boston Globe)
