Patriots vs. Broncos: New England turns ball over on first snap

The New England Patriots’ Christmas Eve game against the Denver Broncos started in the worst possible fashion. After receiving the opening kickoff, quarterback Bailey Zappe was sacked on the very first offensive play from scrimmage, fumbling the football, and watching the Broncos defense recover at the New England 6-yard line.

The play was a direct result of some familiar issues for the Patriots. Zappe had to hold the ball too long, while the makeshift offensive line — Vederian Lowe and James Ferentz got the start at left tackle and guard, respectively — allowed the defensive line to get to the quarter, who himself was unable to properly protect the ball.

Add it all up and you get a bad play that is quite reflective of the state of the Patriots offense in 2023.
